THE PSALMS CALL UPON US TO REMEMBER WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR US AND TO BE THANKFUL !!

“We will recount to generations to come the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the LORD, and the wonderful works he has done.” (Psalm 78:4)

“Be joyful in the LORD, all you lands; serve the LORD with gladness and come before his presence with a song. (Psalm 100: 1)

Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his Name. (Psalm 100: 3)

For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age to age.” (Psalm 100:4)

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING WAYS OF SHARING GOD'S LOVE DURING THE THANKSGIVING SEASON

  • Find ways of sharing the holiday’s feasting and plenty with those who are hungry or alone
  • Invite people before the service or during the service to write down or talk in their households what they have experienced as gifts, blessings, or surprises during the last year. Find a way to "offer" these to God during Thanksgiving worship. People could name them at the offering, place them in an offering plate, or bring them to the altar table.
  • Create a thanksgiving box with your family during the first days of November. Decorate the outside of a shoebox with thanksgiving symbols. Keep this box in a place where it will be seen. Each day during family worship, ask family members to reflect on their day by recalling one aspect of the day for which they are thankful. Write these thanksgivings on a slip of paper for each person. After sharing what is on each slip, place in the box. Close with family prayer, and thank god for your day. On thanksgiving day (or at worship) open the box with your family and review these slips of paper. (Adapted from Linda Holland, Center for Christian Stewardship, The United Methodist Church)

FAITH SHARING AND THANKSGIVING

“The Thanksgiving Holiday is a time for sharing love with family and friends. It is also a great time to share your faith. You can make this Thanksgiving Day a very special day by sharing prayers with your family and friends.”(Lia Icaza-Willetts)

THANKSGIVING PRAYER

Loving God, we thank you for this day.
We thank you for each person gathered here.
We remember those who could not be with us today. …
We pray for your blessing upon our family and friends, upon this table, and upon our conversation.
Bless the food that we eat and bless our lives that we may grow closer to you every day of our lives.
Fill our hearts with love, forgiveness, and understanding for one another.
On this Thanksgiving Day, we remember the poor and the needy.
We pray for your mercy and love to surround them.
Help us to reach out to those in need and to offer a loving hand.
Help us to accept one another as Christ accepted us.
In the name of Jesus, we pray as Jesus taught us to pray (Lord’s Prayer).

CLOSE WITH A BLESSING

Loving God, we pray for your blessing upon our families and friends.
Bless all who are in need of shelter, food, and love on this day.
Bless our lives and embrace us in your loving arms in Jesus name.
AMEN.
